Meet the Coach

Phillip Koshi comes to Stevenson with a distinguished soccer background, having previously been an assistant coach at The Taft School in Connecticut, a top-tier program consistently ranked among the best in New England and nationally.

Since joining the faculty in fall 2019 as the department chair of the World Languages department, he has also brought his passion for soccer to the Pirates as an assistant coach and then head coach of the girls varsity soccer team.

Phillip Koshi took over the reigns of the Pirate girls varsity soccer team in the spring of 2020.

He came to Stevenson, where he also teaches AP Spanish, from The Taft School in Connecticut, where he was assistant coach of the boys varsity soccer program. Taft is a perennial soccer power in the region – a four-time New England semifinalist and top five nationally ranked prep school.

Phillip attended Regis Jesuit High School in Denver, Colorado, where he made the All-Colorado soccer team his senior year and played for the nationally ranked Colorado Rush soccer club.

A four-year player at St. Lawrence University (SLU) in Canton, New York, he was recognized as a member of the NSCAA All-Region team, honored on the Upstate Collegiate Athletics Association All-Academic team, and was recognized with Liberty League All-Academic team honors. During his time at SLU, the team earned a combined record of 67-10-4, won the UCAA and LL championships all four years, and made four NCAA tournaments including two sweet sixteens, an elite eight and a final four.

Following his career at SLU, he played soccer in the Professional Development League, United Soccer League and Major League Soccer for the Cincinnati Kings and the Colorado Rapids. He earned his M.A. in Spanish at Arizona State University.

Training Advantage

At Stevenson, soccer thrives within an athletic department that champions multi-sport participation. Guided by wellness and performance research, we develop well-rounded players while fully supporting those pursuing collegiate opportunities as well as those seeking the camaraderie and growth of being part of a team. Athletes have year-round access to turf and training spaces for optional technical work (first touch, finishing, passing patterns), small-sided play, film study, and strength/mobility. In season, practices are purposeful and coaching is individualized; out of season, training is flexible—designed to complement other team commitments so students can excel across multiple sports.

Whether you’re preparing for college soccer or looking to contribute in a competitive, supportive environment, there’s a place for you in Stevenson Soccer.
