Meet the Coach

Cristian Materazzi is a dedicated soccer coach who has brought his extensive coaching experience and passion for soccer to inspire young athletes.

His role as head coach has elevated the program, helped players develop individual skills and increased teamwork and sportsmanship among students.

Under his leadership, the team has gained valuable insights from a coach with a wealth of collegiate and professional experience, contributing to a robust athletic environment. As an alumni of CSU Monterey Bay, he played as a goalkeeper and also gained professional experience, including a trial with Club America in Mexico and playing with California Gold in the United Soccer League.

Cristian Materazzi is a former California State University (CSU) Monterey Bay goalkeeper and alumnus who brings decades of coaching experience to his role as Stevenson’s boys varsity soccer head coach. He joined the Pirates after a wide-ranging collegiate coaching career that spans both coasts.

Following a professional playing stint with California Gold and a trial with Club América, Cristian coached at his alma mater, CSU Monterey Bay, where he assisted both the men’s and women’s programs. He later joined West Virginia University (WVU), contributing to a Big East Conference title and a record-setting season for the program’s goalkeeper.

He went on to serve as the first assistant for men’s soccer at Stetson University before becoming the head women’s coach at Alderson Broaddus. There, he led the team to multiple postseason appearances and helped develop several All-Conference players.

Cristian returned to WVU to coach goalkeepers, guiding the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and mentoring an All-American goalkeeper and CONCACAF award finalist.

He eventually returned to CSU Monterey Bay as an assistant coach for the women’s team, a role he continues to hold alongside his position at Stevenson.

Cristian holds an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and is married to CSU Monterey Bay Head Volleyball Coach Courtney (Taubert) Materazzi. The two met as student-athletes at CSU Monterey Bay.

Training Advantage

At Stevenson, Soccer thrives within an athletic department that champions multi-sport participation. Guided by wellness and performance research, we develop well-rounded players while fully supporting those pursuing collegiate opportunities as well as those seeking the camaraderie and growth of being part of a team. Athletes have year-round access to turf and training spaces for optional technical work (first touch, finishing, passing patterns), small-sided play, film study, and strength/mobility. In season, practices are purposeful and coaching is individualized; out of season, training is flexible—designed to complement other team commitments so students can excel across multiple sports.

Whether you’re preparing for college soccer or looking to contribute in a competitive, supportive environment, there’s a place for you in Stevenson Soccer.
